The world-especially the tech world- is changing rapidly.
It is changing too fast for traditional education institutions to catch up with the trend. For this very reason, we have witnessed that alternative or new education institutions/agencies such as MOOCs and/or micro-credentials grew a lot across the globe.
However, there are numerous researches out there that foresee a shortage of workers in the technology industries. Also, no other education institutions can teach/train students to be competent to work in the tech fields than world-class companies themselves. From this vantage point, several U.S. companies who are leading the industry including Amazon, Intel, IBM, and Starbucks have partnered with U.S. universities to educate college students.
Examples of curricula and programs offered by the U.S. companies
Here are some of the examples:
- Amazon Web Services partnered with Arizona State University for cloud computing education.
- Intel teamed up with Maricopa Community College in Arizona to offer two weeks program to train students as semiconductor technicians.
- IBM’s software engineers can transfer their work experiences to college credits
- Starbucks partnered with Arizona State University to build the ASU-Starbucks Center for the Future of People and the Planet for sustainable consumer experiences at Starbucks
Therefore, if you are interested in learning those technologies, check out individual programs/universities/colleges.
Now, let me ask you what comes up to your mind when you think about the company “Intel.”
For me, the first thought that came to me is that Apple no longer wanted to work with Intel as they successfully manufactured their own chip named “M1.” Although it is true that Apple is always at the top of the game and Intel stickers still can be found in other companies’ tech items.
2022 Intel’s investment plan
Anyway, Intel announced its survival plan which includes investing a huge sum of money in the future. Its plan can be summarized as below:
- Intel is going to invest $40 billion to build two $20 billion computer chip plants in Columbus, Ohio. These 2 chip plants are expected to be built by 2025 starting from late this year (2022). Experts expect that this construction plan would bring 3000+ new jobs at the company as well as 7000+ constructions jobs.
- $50 million will be granted to Ohio colleges to establish the “Intel Semiconductor Education and Research Program” which is going to be a center for multiple institutions.
- Another $50 million is going to be matched by the U.S. National Science Foundation and all the money will be invested in 2-year and 4-year universities across the U.S. to develop associate and bachelor curricula and programs for semiconductor manufacturing education.
Takeaways
Several takeaways for international students/agents/parents:
- STEM field especially the semiconductor field is very promising. More and more companies and universities are offering programs or curriculum that is related to the semiconductor.
- If you are studying architecture/interior, etc you may be able to find employment opportunities in Ohio. It will be a good place to start looking for openings for your OPT participation after graduation.
- If you are interested in working for global semiconductor companies like Samsung, TSMC, be on the lookout for semiconductor programs/curricula across the U.S which can increase your employability.
