Meta (a.k.a. Facebook), Qualcomm (semiconductor-related company), Victory XR (metaverse education-related company), and T-mobile (mobile telecommunication company) teamed up for incorporating metaverse into education and to create “Metaversity” campuses.
The word “Metaversity” was firstly introduced and used by Victory XR when they were working with Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia to put metaverse into practice. The Metaversity project will take place in the following universities in the U.S.:
- South Dakota State University
- Morehouse College
- University of Kansas School of Nursing
- New Mexico State University
- West Virginia University
- University of Maryland Global Campus
- Southwest Oregon Community College
As a part of the Meta Immersive Learning, some universities like South Dakota State University will be provided free Quest 2 headsets from Fall 2022. There have been some U.S. universities and colleges including Bowdoin College and Virginia Union University that give out free iPads, iMacs or Apple pencils to students to increase their digital literacy and increase academic effectiveness. If the project goes well, we may see more and more universities and colleges that provide VR headsets to students for their full college experiences.
Headsets are not the only support that Meta is planning to provide to these universities. Meta is going to assist the aforementioned campuses to develop the digital twin campuses. In the digital classrooms, students will have a new way of learning things such as going on field trips by taking a time machine. Professors and instructors will undergo necessary training as well.
As a matter of fact, Meta is not the first company that tries to incorporate Metaverse into education, although the company name sounds like so. For example, Arizona State University is partnering with Dreamscape Immersive to develop Biology VR classes. The project received the spotlight as a famous movie director Steven Spielberg played a role when it comes to designing the classes.
We haven’t seen anything spectacular from Meta since it changed its name from Facebook to Meta and I am pretty sure Meta is more aware of that than everyone else. In that sense, Meta would love to partner with education institutions that have interests in VR education and make it work to show vividly what they have been working on.
For this reason, if you are looking for U.S. universities and colleges that have VR, and Metaverse initiatives, check out those 7 U.S. higher education institutions! The partnership may change but VR, metaverse, and education technology seem to be very promising fields.
