미국 유학을 계획하시는 분들 이라면, 졸업 후에 미국 취업을 희망하시는 분들이 많을 것 입니다. 대부분의 유학생들이 유학 중, 혹은 공부를 마친 후에, OPT (Optional Practical Training)를 신청하여 미국에서 합법적으로 근무하기 위한 허가를 받습니다. 더 나아가 취업비자를 얻기 위해서는 1년 간 주어지는 OPT 기간 동안 취업비자 수속을 밟아야 하는데요, 전공마다 차이가 있긴 하지만, 아무래도 1년 동안 취업비자까지 프로세싱 하는 것은 쉬운 케이스는 아닙니다.

그래서 많은 유학생들은 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) 전공을 선호하는 경향이 있습니다. 왜냐하면 STEM 전공의 경우, 첫 OPT 종료 후에 추가적으로 24개월 더 일할 수 있는 STEM OPT 연장 신청이 가능하기 때문입니다. STEM OPT 연장 신청 조건 중 하나로는 STEM 전공 학위가 있어야 합니다. 이러한 점에서 미국에서 취업비자를 공략하기 위한 첫번 째 방법 중 하나는 STEM 전공을 선택하는 것입니다.

CIP code 란?

 CIP 코드는 classification of instructional programs의 약자로, 미국 교육부 (Department of Education, ED) 산하의 National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) 에 의해 정해지는 코드입니다. 만약, I-20 발급 받으셨다면, I-20에 전공과 함께 기재된 CIP code를 확인하실 수 있습니다. I-20 에 적힌 바로 이 CIP 코드가 STEM OPT 연장이 가능한지, 아닌지를 결정하는 요소입니다. 이 때, 학생의 전공과 I-20에 기재된 과목 명칭이 100% 같지 않을 수 있는데, 큰 문제는 아닙니다. 예를 들어, 학생이 재학중인 전공 명은 Agroecology and Agriculture Science 인데, I-20에 기재된 전공은 01.0308 Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture 일 수 있습니다. 이는 학교의 DSO (Designated School Official)이 학교 전공들과 CIP code를 대조하여 가장 관련있는 코드 타이틀을 I-20 에 기재하기 때문에 발생할 수 있는 문제입니다. 그러므로, 본인의 전공과 비슷하고 I-20에 기재된 전공이 아래의 STEM OPT list 에 포함되어 있다면, 글자가 정확히 일치하지 않아도 상관없습니다.

아래 테이블은 STEM Designated Degree Program list 로 알려진 STEM OPT 리스트입니다. 이글 작성 시점 기준, 해당 파일은 2016년이 마지막으로 업데이트 되어있으며 2020년 업데이트는 반영되어 있지 않아, 아래와 같이 직접 수정하여 공유합니다. 업데이트된 CIP 코드나 CIP code title은 볼드 처리 (굵게 처리) 하였습니다. Ctrl+F 키를 눌러 학생이 관심있는 전공을 검색하시면 됩니다. 만약, 현재 재학생분들 중, 본인의 전공의 CIP 코드나 code title 이 바뀐 경우, 해당 변화가 반영된 I-20를 발급받게 됩니다. 다음 섹션에서는 새롭게 추가된 CIP code들에 대해 알아보도록 하겠습니다.

CIP code 업데이트 2020

미국 정부기관 파트너 중 하나인 Study in the States에 의하면, 미국 교육부의 교육통계청 (the National Center for Education Statistics, NCES)은 10년마다 한번씩 교육 프로그램들을 개편한다고 합니다. 2020년의 경우, 2010년 이후 개편되는 해이기 때문에 기존 프로그램의 경우에는 위에서 보았던 몇몇 업데이트가 있었으며, 496개의 새로운 CIP 코드들도 추가되었다고 합니다. 496개의 새로운 CIP 코드 중, 17개가 STEM OPT 조건에 맞는 전공들로 STEM Designated Degree Program list에 포함되었습니다. 새로운 CIP 코드들은 CIP conversion 2020 웹페이지를 참고하였습니다.

업데이트: 업데이트된 CIP code 들이 담긴 DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List 가 2021년 2월 1일에 공개되었습니다. 유학생들은 해당리스트에서 본인의 전공이 스템 오피티 신청 자격에 부합하는지 확인하실 수 있습니다.
